Q: When should I turn on and turn off my sprinkler system?

A: At Exceptional Lawn we recommend you contact us to turn on your system beginning April 1st, weather permitting. We recommend that you schedule an appointment near the end of October to have your system shut down to avoid freezing.
Q: What is Aeration and how often should it be scheduled?

A: At Exceptional Lawn we recommend you schedule a professional Aeration treatment at least once a year. The process of Aeration is crucial to maintain a healthy green lawn. Over time the soil beneath your lawn gets compacted. This can occur because of traffic from pets, kids or even your weekly lawn mowing. Compacted Soil results in poor water drainage, air circulation and nutrient absorption. Aeration can help loosen compacted soil, allowing water and fertilizer to penetrate deeper.
Q: Should you bag your clippings?

A: Clippings should not be bagged with every mow. Clippings can provide ground cover and natural fertilization to your lawn; however it is important to bag your lawn under certain conditions. If the grass is higher than normal thatch can build up on your yard and actually kill grass. Thatch is the build up of dead grass that can cover the turf blocking sunlight and moisture.

Q: Why is weekly service better than bi-weekly?

A: Exceptional Lawn recommends weekly mowing. When a lawn is mowed bi-weekly the grass grows much higher, this leads to increased lawn clippings and uneven growth. Mowing weekly stimulates your lawn and creates a nice even turf. Not only does a weekly mowed lawn look better it also stimulates better growth. If grass grows too high between mowing, the root structure can be exposed and this can ultimately kill your grass and lead to thatch.

Q: How do you take care of thatch?

A: Thatch build up can be caused by a variety of different issues. Insect infestations, improper watering or fertilizing. Avoid over fertilizing and overwatering, and when thatch starts to appear call Exceptional Lawn to schedule aeration.

Q: When do you need tree trimming?

A: Dead wood can be and should be trimmed any time of year. Dead wood on trees can lead to insect infestations mold or diseases that can ruin your trees. When you notice dead limbs or wood on your trees, call Exceptional Lawn service to have it trimmed. Certain trees should be trimmed at different times of the year. It is best to trim hardwoods in the late winter or early spring. Flowering fruit trees should be trimmed when blooms appear in the spring. If you are unsure what type of trees you have and when they need to be pruned or trimmed call Exceptional Lawn today.

Q: How often should I water?

A: Your lawn should receive at least one inch of water per week. Over watering can also cause issues, over saturated soil can drown the roots of your grass. Make sure you contact Truckee Meadows Water Authority for proper watering days in your area. Contact Exceptional Lawn for free consultation for a review of your current irrigation system.
